THE RIGHT VIDEOGRAPHER
I know it’s super confusing when trying to choose which creative partners to hire for this once in a lifetime day. After all, most likely you’ve never done this before so how do you know? There are two important considerations to keep in mind when deciding who to commission to document your event. The first… wedding video varies WIDELY. You will find companies offering all different styles at all different price points. When you are comparing work, make sure you keep in mind that you are not comparing apples to apples. For example, wedding video is not like trying to get a model of car with the exact options and colour you want for the best price. You can easily call around dealerships, tell them what you are looking for, and they will give you a price. No matter where you end up buying it from, it would be the same as buying the same model of car from another dealership. Second, there is so much more to cinematography than what you see in the finished films. It's important to consider experience, quality of gear used, audio capture, and most importantly, the level of personalisation to make a film YOURS vs. just average.
Every video company runs things differently. I can tell you without batting an eye, that my pricing is based on the absolute incredible amount of high-end gear (and back-ups), the incredible talent, and the amount of hours of labour it takes to edit a film made just for you - including complex color grading. One that captures your personality, the vibe of your event, your friends and family, the gorgeous decor, and all of the audio and movement. Tying all of this together into a time-based story based on the feeling and tempo of music is a very very long process. Yes it would be much easier to edit every wedding the same and only film the footage that we would then fit into that template. But that’s not me.
At the end of the day… you will know you’ve found your cinematographer when you gravitate to one’s style more than any others. If you enjoy the films they produce the most, that means you will enjoy yours tenfold!
WHY NOT HAVING A HIGH QUALITY VIDEO IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST REGRETS OF NEWLY MARRIED COUPLES.
